Simpson and W.B. Tucker. The name Melissa is derived from the Greek word for "honeybee". The city was originally settled as a farming community, but later became known for its dairy industry. Melissa is home to the first and only dairy queen in Texas.

The city is also home to the Melissa Independent School District, which serves the city of Melissa and the surrounding area. The district has five schools: three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Melissa is a great place to visit for its small-town charm, its historical significance, and its beautiful scenery.
