Greenville TX is a city in and the county seat of Hunt County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 25,557. Greenville was founded in 1846 after it was determined that the former site of Fort Parham, would be unsuitable for a fort. It was named after Thomas J. Green, who later fought in the Mexican-American War. The city became a center for cotton plantations and farmers in Northeast Texas. It had one of the largest slaveholding populations in the state before the American Civil War. Cotton from Greenville was shipped to markets by way of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, which reached Greenville in 1872. In 1875, Greenville was chartered as a city by the state legislature. It became a prosperous commercial city after the railroad routes expanded in the 1880s, running from Greenville to nearby cities such as Dallas and Commerce.

The city is also served by closer regional airports such as Majors Airport in nearby unincorporated Eden, about 15 miles (24 km) away, and the newly expanded Collin County Regional Airport at McKinney, about 30 miles (48 km) to the north.

Greenville is a regional healthcare center for Northeast Texas and is home to Hunt Regional Medical Center, a Level III trauma center. The hospital has 242 beds and serves as the primary medical facility for much of Hunt County and portions of Collin, Fannin, and Rockwall counties.

Greenville is also home to The University of Texas at Dallas' School of Management Greenville Campus. This facility offers junior- and senior-level coursework in business, computer science, and engineering for students who live in the Greenville area.

Greenville is governed by a city commission with a mayor and four commissioners. The current mayor is Phebe Ann Lewis, who has served since May 2009.
